Merritt Lyndon Fernald: 1926 Trip
|
On this early Fall trip, Fernald was accompanied by Bayard H.
Long and John Milton Fogg, Jr. [archived file - may be slow to load].
Their initial base was at Lark Harbour, in the Bay of Islands. The party began
their collecting in the vicinity of the town, finding especially interesting things on Lark Mountain. Long and
Fogg made two
trips to the serpentine tablelands of North Arm, and despite strong winds, the whole party managed to explore most of
the high islands in the mouth of the Bay of Islands.
However, their hopes of sailing south along the coast to the mouth of the
Serpentine River, and then ascending the Lewis Hills, were dashed by continuing rough seas. Eventually they
gave up and moved south to Burgeo, where they collected towards Sand Bank, around the Great Barachois, and
along Grandy's Brook.
While many interesting plants were collected on the trip, few were "limestone" species because of the
nature of the rock. Overall, because of the continuously bad weather, and the missed opportunities, the trip
was rather disappointing to Fernald.
